Hakone day trip from Tokyo: what fits in one day

Hakone is a mountain region, not one attraction. Here is the route that fits, what to leave out and when a car is worth it.

A Hakone day trip works when you treat Lake Ashi, Owakudani and Hakone Shrine as the core. Add one optional stop if traffic and your pace allow. Trying to bolt Fuji Fifth Station, an onsen, the open-air museum and Gotemba onto the same day creates a tour spent watching the clock.

The route we can actually book

  1. 01

    08:00: Your hotel

The standard Tokyo pickup is 08:00. Fuji and Hakone pickups use a later local schedule.

  2. 02

    Morning: Lake Yamanaka

Begin on the Fuji side of the route, with mountain views when the weather is clear.

  3. 03

Late morning: Owakudani and Hakone Ropeway

Cross the volcanic valley and take the ropeway when it is operating. Tickets are paid locally.

  4. 04

Afternoon: Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine

See Lake Ashi, take the pirate cruise if you wish, and visit the lakeside shrine.

  5. 05

If time allows: Museum or Gotemba

Choose the Hakone Open-Air Museum or Gotemba outlets as an optional stop, subject to traffic and your pace.

  6. 06

    Late afternoon: The drive back

Return toward Tokyo after the Hakone portion of the day.

  7. 07

    18:00: Your hotel, or dinner

The standard Tokyo schedule finishes at about 18:00.

The order is flexible. Weather, ropeway operation, traffic and how long you spend at each stop determine what fits. The published booking is 10 hours from pickup to drop-off, not ten hours at the attractions.

Why the map is misleading

Hakone’s sights sit on different sides of steep terrain. Owakudani is above the caldera, Lake Ashi is below it, and the roads narrow near the main viewpoints. Public transport is part of the experience, but the sightseeing loop uses several modes and each transfer consumes time.

The official Hakone Navi route tools cover the train, cable car, ropeway, buses and Lake Ashi cruise. Check its live service notice on the morning you travel: wind, maintenance and volcanic conditions can change the route. The official JNTO guide also treats Hakone as a region built around hot springs, museums, Owakudani and Lake Ashi rather than a single station stop.

Live product

Private Mt. Fuji & Hakone Day Tour from Tokyo

From ¥68,385 per vehicle on the live Bókun calendar checked 1 October 2026. Online booking closes 10 hours before departure.

Choose a date and vehicle to see the exact total. Fifth Station is included only on a rate marked “with 5th Station.” Leave Bókun’s optional return-tour box unticked if you want only this day tour.

What to cut first

Cut shopping before scenery if this is your only Hakone day. Gotemba can take as long as you allow it, and it sits outside the central sightseeing loop. The Open-Air Museum also deserves more than a rushed photo stop. Choose one of those only when it matters more to you than the ropeway, Lake Ashi or the shrine.

If your main goal is Mount Fuji rather than Hakone, read our Tokyo to Mt. Fuji car-versus-train guide. If you are still choosing the destination, compare the two day trips from Tokyo we currently book.

Common questions

Is Hakone possible as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. Keep the route selective and start early. Asoko Trip’s private product is 10 hours from pickup to drop-off and combines Lake Yamanaka, Owakudani, Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine.

Can you see Mount Fuji from Hakone?

You can see Mount Fuji from several points around Hakone and Lake Ashi in clear weather, but no view is guaranteed. Cloud and haze can hide the mountain even when Tokyo is sunny.

Does the Hakone day tour include Fuji Fifth Station?

Only a Bókun vehicle rate explicitly marked “with 5th Station” includes it. The standard route should not be assumed to include Fifth Station.
