A practical 5-day Tokyo itinerary, grouped by neighbourhood

Five days works when you stop treating Tokyo as a checklist. This plan groups each day geographically, leaves room for bookings and shows where a car actually helps.

The official GO TOKYO five-day plan uses the same sound principle: group sights by area. Tokyo is too large to cross repeatedly without losing hours to stations and transfers. Pick two or three anchors each day, then let the streets between them be part of the trip.

DayAreaMain route
1East TokyoAsakusa, Senso-ji, Kappabashi and Skytree
2West TokyoMeiji Jingu, Harajuku, Shibuya and Shinjuku
3Central TokyoTsukiji, Imperial Palace area, Ginza and Yurakucho
4Ueno and AkihabaraOne museum, Ameyoko and Akihabara
5Flexible dayUse a private vehicle, revisit a favourite area or take one day trip

Day 1: Asakusa and the east side

Start at Senso-ji before Nakamise becomes busiest, then walk to Kappabashi if kitchenware and Japanese craft shops interest you. Continue to Tokyo Skytree only if you want an observation deck or the shops around it. Ueno can fit late in the day, but it is better saved for the museum day if you want more than a quick walk.

Day 2: Meiji Jingu to Shinjuku

Begin at Meiji Jingu, then move through Harajuku and Omotesando toward Shibuya. Finish in Shinjuku after dark. These neighbourhoods connect naturally on the west side; adding Asakusa or Tsukiji to the same day creates unnecessary cross-city travel.

Day 3: Tsukiji, the palace area and Ginza

Visit Tsukiji Outer Market in the morning, when its food businesses are active. Continue toward the Imperial Palace East Gardens, checking the official opening calendar before you go, then finish around Ginza and the railway arches at Yurakucho. Reserve ticketed attractions before building the rest of the day around them.

Day 4: Ueno and Akihabara

Choose one Ueno museum rather than trying to clear the park. The Tokyo National Museum alone can fill several hours. Walk through Ameyoko afterward and continue south to Akihabara if anime, games or electronics matter to you. If they do not, use the afternoon for Yanaka or a longer museum visit.

Day 5: make the flexible day earn its place

This is the day to solve the needs your other days could not: several distant highlights, young children, limited mobility, luggage, or a group with different priorities. Asoko Trip's live Tokyo product is a customizable 10-hour private day for up to 13 guests, with pickup and return inside Tokyo's 23 wards.

The suggested stops include Tsukiji, Senso-ji, Tokyo Skytree, the Imperial Palace East Gardens, Meiji Jingu and Shibuya. They are suggestions, not a promise that every stop will fit. Tell the team which three or four matter most and let traffic determine the order.

How to make it four days or seven

For four days, remove the area that least matches your interests or fold selected stops into the flexible day. For seven days, keep the five-day structure and add one day trip plus one slower day. Our Tokyo day-trip comparison explains the real tradeoff between Kamakura and the longer Fuji–Hakone route.

The Tokyo product price was checked in the live booking calendar on 1 October 2026. Attraction tickets, meals, pickup outside the 23 wards and overtime are extra unless the selected rate says otherwise.

Common questions

Is five days enough for Tokyo?

Five days is enough for a first visit if each day stays within one side of the city. It gives you time for the main east, central and west Tokyo neighbourhoods without changing districts after every stop.

How should I turn this into a four-day Tokyo itinerary?

Combine the flexible day with the neighbourhood day that matters least to you. Do not try to compress all five full schedules into four days.

What should I add for seven days in Tokyo?

Keep the five city days and add one day trip plus one slower interest-led day for museums, shopping, food or a neighbourhood you want to revisit.
